How to Start an Email List for Free

Why a list

Social platforms decide who sees your posts. An email list is a direct line to people who asked to hear from you, and you can move it between providers.

Step 1: Pick a free email platform

Several providers have free plans. For example, Kit's pricing page lists a free plan "up to 10,000 subscribers" (kit.com/pricing, checked October 31, 2026). Compare features on each provider's pricing page.

Step 2: Decide your one promise

"A weekly shop update", "one woodworking tip each Friday". Specific beats general.

Step 3: Create a signup form

Your platform generates a form or landing page; place it where your audience already is (bio link, website, receipts).

Step 4: Offer a reason to join

A checklist, template, discount or early access. See lead magnet ideas.

Step 5: Write a welcome email now

Set it up before your first subscriber arrives. See the 3-email welcome sequence.

Step 6: Stay legal

US commercial email must follow the CAN-SPAM Act — include a physical mailing address and a working unsubscribe. Email platforms add an unsubscribe link automatically.
